“Exciting.”
“Calming.”
“Like a Monet painting!”
These are comments from people who’ve purchased our pottery since 1986—the year we (finally) hit upon the Bailey-Brown ‘look’.
Our pottery had always been wonderfully functional: dishwasher, microwave and oven-safe; generous, finger-friendly handles; spouts that pour perfectly; excellent stackability for space-saving convenience; sturdy porcelain clay construction with sponged-smooth surfaces; designs that work brilliantly to meet real household needs (and a few frivolous ones, too).
But we wanted more than superb design and function. We wanted a celebration of colour—the feel of sun on shimmering water, of windswept grasses and sand and waterlilies. We wanted to freely paint glorious colour on each of our pieces—and at the same time have each piece instantly recognizable as a Bailey-Brown.
So—we experimented. From 1980 to 1986. Taking detailed notes as we tried countless combinations of glazes and stains, fired slowly to ensure the deepest saturation of colour.
And then, one morning, we opened our kiln, peered in at our latest experiment, and smiled. With 23 ingredients, applied in 6 separate glazes and stains, we’d finally achieved the look we wanted. A look with enduring appeal.
We are proud to present Bailey-Brown pottery pieces available for shipping from our studio to your home. Or, if you are ever in our neighbourhoood (2 ½ hours from either Toronto or Ottawa), news and familiar faces are always welcome, by chance or appointment. Or check our Show Schedule!
